Angie Wetzel Raney

Angie Lee Wetzel Raney was born on Friday, February 27, 1891 in Comanche, Comanche County, Texas to Warren Augustus Wetzel and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Sliger (Wetzel). She was their second child and first daughter together. The sitting President of the United Sates at the time was Benjamin Harrison.

Angie Married Rev. JAMES ELDRIDGE RANEY on 12 November 1910; a Freewill Baptist Minister, who’s first wife had died.

Together they had five children, all girls, and all born in Hood County near present day Acton.

Their children were, in birth order:

  1. FLOSSIE (born 2 Nov 1915),
  2. ROZYLENE MAXINE (born 19 July 1919),
  3. MAVIS (born 15 Mar 1924),
  4. DAPHNA (born 27 Feb 1925)
  5. JIMMIE LEE (born 23 Dec 1931)

After their marriage, Angie joined James on his 114 acre farm just across the Brazos river from present day Pecan Plantation Estates. They managed a family of 7 in a small 3 room house with no indoor plumbing. James died in 1933 leaving his wife and the older girls to raise Daphna and Jimmie Lee. Angie never re-married.

After the girls had married and moved away; she lived there on that same 114 acre farm, in the same 3 room house without plumbing, until her death just 2 days before Thanksgiving, on November, 25 1980 at the age of 89. When in her 80’s; Angie still made her own ‘Lye Soap’, washed clothes with a Rub Board, and bathed, all in the same number 3 washtub; She also drew all of her water up from the well by hand; 1 bucket at a time. Furthermore, you had better not get caught drinking from the ‘Company’ dipper. (Yes there is a difference!)

When asked why she would not allow her children to install running water and an air conditioner. She would say “City folks have things backwards. They want to eat outside and go to the bathroom in the house!” ~ R.C. Wetzel
