WARREN AUGUSTUS WETZEL – A Chronological Timeline
September 8, 1842 – April 26, 1929
The year was 1842. There were 26 states forming the United States, which had a population of 17 million people. When President William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia in 1840, Vice President John Tyler had become the 10th president. At that time, Texas was a 6-year old Republic. In the fall of that year on Tuesday, September 8, 1842, an 8th child, Warren Augustus, was born on a farm in the area of Spring Place in Murray County, Georgia, to Eli George and Piety Anthony Wetzel. His siblings were James, Louisey, Joseph, Lephroney, George W., John J. and Greenberry Pinkney. Also that year on March 15, a baby girl, Martha Minerva, had been born on a neighboring farm to a Baptist minister, Rev. William Bates and his wife, Rosa C. Keith, who would grow up to become Warren’s wife.
In 1843, when Warren was one year old, Daniel Webster retired as Secretary of State. John C. Fremont crossed the Rocky Mountains to California.
In 1844, when Warren was 2 years old, James K. Polk was elected the 11th president. Samuel F. B. Morse invented the telegraph. The Sinaitic Manuscript of the Bible was recovered at Mt. Sinai. The Methodist Episcopal Church split over the issue of slavery.
In 1845, when Warren was 3 years old, his sister, Fanny Elizabeth, was born. Florida was admitted as the 27th state, and Texas as the 28th. James White founded the Seventh-Day Adventist church movement. The Southern Baptist Convention separated from the General Convention.
In 1846, when Warren was 4 years old, the Mexican War was fought over the territory of New Mexico. New Mexico was annexed in August. There was a potato famine in Ireland. Iowa was admitted as the 29th state. Elias Howe invented the sewing machine.
In 1847, when Warren was 5 years old, his sister, Mary J., was born, making 10 children in the family. Gold was discovered in California and 147 Mormons, under Brigham Young, who had succeeded Joseph Smith, founded Salt Lake City in Utah territory.
In 1848, when Warren was 6 years old, Zachary Taylor was elected the 12th president. Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state. The Communist Manifesto was issued by Marx and Engels.
In 1849, when Warren was 7 years old, the California gold rush began. Walter Hunt invented the safety pin. The speed of light was measured by Armand Fizeau.
In 1850, when Warren was 8 years old, California was admitted as the 31st state. President Taylor died of sunstroke and Vice President Millard Fillmore became the 13th president. The population of the U.S. was 23 million, with 3.2 million slaves.
In 1851, when Warren was 9 years old, the Louisiana Purchase was opened for settlement. Isaac Singer patented the continuous stitch sewing machine.
In 1852, when Warren was 10 years old, Franklin Pierce was elected the 14th president. Wells Fargo was founded.
In 1853, when Warren was 11 years old, the first woman, Antoinette Brown, was ordained and installed as pastor of a Congregational church. Washington territory was formed. Samuel Colt introduced his new pistol.
In 1854, when Warren was 12 years old, the Republican Party was formed. Hudson Taylor went to China as a missionary. The Kansas and Nebraska territories were formed.
In 1855, when Warren was 13 years old, the first iron steamer crossed the Atlantic in 9 ½ days.
In 1856, when Warren was 14 years old, James Buchanan was elected the 15th president. James Kelly and Jack Smith in Australia fought in a bare knuckle boxing fight that lasted for 186 rounds in 6 hours and 15 minutes.
In 1857, when Warren was 15 years old, the Comstock Lode was discovered in Nevada. A transatlantic cable was laid.
In 1858, when Warren was 16 years old, Bernadette of Lourdes had her 18 “visions” of the Virgin Mary. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state.
In 1859, when Warren was 17 years old, Sarah Ann Elizabeth Sliger, who would become Warren’s second wife, was born March 3 at Fayetteville, Tennessee. And Jonathan Solomon Beard, who would become the first husband of Warren’s second wife, Sallie, was born December 15. The first oil well was drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania. Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state. John Brown raided Harper’s Ferry . Work on the Suez Canal began. Charles Blondin crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope.
In 1860, when Warren was 18 years old, Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president. The first oil well in Kansas was drilled. The Pony Express began. The first recorded baseball game was played in San Francisco.
In 1861, while Warren was still 18 years old, the Confederate States of America was organized with 12 states. Jefferson Davis was elected president. The first shot of the Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12. On Thursday, December 19, when Warren was 19, he married Maratha Minerva Bates. Kansas was admitted as the 34th state. The US population was 32 million.
In 1862, while Warren was still 19 years old, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Spring Place, Georgia on Monday, March 10. He served as a Private in Company “A”, 39th Regiment of Georgia Infantry, Cummings Volunteer Brigade, Stephenson’s Division, Army of West Tennessee. When he was 20, his firstborn child, Frances Augusta, was born December 2. Richard J. Gatling invented the 10-barrel machine gun.
In 1863, when Warren was not yet 21 years old, he was fighting in the Civil War. On January 1, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Warren was at Vicksburg, Mississippi when General Grant’s army besieged the city on Monday, May 18. He was one of the 31,000 men under the command of Confederate General John C. Pemberton who surrendered and was taken prisoner on Saturday, July 4. Because of the time, manpower and cost involved in transporting all these prisoners north to a prison camp, General Grant allowed those who were so inclined to be paroled. Warren was one of these, signing his parole on Wednesday, July 8 with his “X”. West Virginia broke from Virginia to become the 35th state. Arizona and Idaho were organized as territories. President Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address. The French captured Mexico City and made Maximilian the Emperor of Mexico.
In 1864, while Warren was yet 21 years old, he became one of the brave and gallant defenders of the city of Atlanta under the leadership of General John B. Hood, who had just replaced General Joseph C. Johnston on July 17, against 90,000 young seasoned veterans led by General William Tecumseh Sherman. Warren’s 2nd child, Rosa Jane, was born June 10. The Battle of Atlanta took place on July 22. Six days before his 22nd birthday, on September 2, Atlanta lay in ashes. Nevada was admitted as the 36th state. Montana territory was organized. The words “In God We Trust” first appeared on US coins.
In 1865, while Warren was 22 years old, on Palm Sunday, April 9, the Civil War ended and General Robert E. Lee and General Ulysses S. Grant met in the front parlor of Wilmer McLean’s home in the little Virginia village of Appomattox Court House where Lee laid down his sword. President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14 and died the next day. Vice President Andrew Johnson became the 17th president. Warren returned home to his family in Spring Place, Georgia and celebrated his 23rd birthday.
In 1866, when Warren was 24 years old, Jesse and Frank James began their outlaw career. Oil ws discovered in Texas. The Chisholm Trail was opened from Texas to Kansas.
In 1867, when Warren was still 24 years old, his 3rd child and first son, William Pinkney, was born on January 28. Nebraska became the 37th state. Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million.
In 1868, when Warren was 26 years old, Ulysses S. Grant was elected the 18th president. Warren’s 4th child, George Columbus, was born September 27.
In 1869, when Warren was 27 years old, his 5th child, Martha Ann, was born November 12. The Suez Canal opened. The East and West were united by rail on May 10 as the Union Pacific and Central Pacific linked in Utah. The Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first salaried baseball team.
In 1870, when Warren was 28 years old, he and his family left Georgia in a wagon train with the Bates, Dyers, Whites and Baghills families for Texas. They settled in Coryell County in the Blue Creek settlement five miles out of Gatesville. Texas and Mississippi were re-admitted to the Union.
In 1871, when Warren was 29 years old, his 6th child, Charley Josephus, was born December 31. Dallas was incorporated as a city. P. T. Barnum opened his circus. US population, 39 million.
In 1872, when Warren was 30 years old, he and his family moved to Comanche County near Board Church. Yellowstone National Park was established.
In 1873, when Warren was 31 years old, Joseph F. Glidden invented barbed wire.
In 1874, when Warren was 32 years old, the first American zoo was established in Philadelphia. The game of tennis was introduced to America.
In 1875, while Warren was yet 32 years old, his 7th child, Martin Julius, was born on September 7, just one day before Warren’s 33rd birthday.
In 1876, when Warren was 34 years old, Rutherford B. Hayes was elected the 19th president. Colorado was admitted as the 38th state. Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone. General Custer was killed in the Battle of Little Bighorn. The United States celebrated its Centennial. Warren’s seven children were 14, 12, 9, 8, 7, 5 and 1.
In 1877, when Warren was 35 years old, his 8th child, Ellen Piety, was born October 23. The Federal troops withdrew from the South. Thomas A. Edison invented the phonograph.
In 1878, when Warren was 36 years old, Billy the Kid became involved in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico territory. The first bicycle in America appeared.
In 1879, when Warren was 37 years old, Thomas A. Edison invented the incandescent electric lamp.
In 1880, when Warren was 38 years old, James A. Garfield was elected the 20th president. His in-laws, the Bates family, moved from Coryell County to Comanche County. On December 15, Sallie Sliger married Jonathan Solomon Beard in Comanche County.
In 1881, while Warren was still 38 years old, his 1st child, Frances Augusta, married Pinkney Smart on January 16. Warren and Martha became grandparents for the first time when Alvin Augustus Smart was born October 22 to Frances and Pinkney. They called him “Scoot”. President Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, and Vice President Chester A. Arthur became the 21st president. The Wyatt Earp shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, took place.
In 1882, when Warren was 40 years old, his 2nd child, Rosa Jane, married Jefferson D. Hodge on December 18. Judge Roy Bean became “The Law East of the Pecos.” Jesse James was shot and killed. And Martha Elvira Beard was born on January 1 to Sallie and Johnny Beard.
In 1883, while Warren was yet 40 years old, his 9th child, Warren Gordon, was born February 27. Warren became a grandfather for the 2nd time on August 27 when Ollie May Hodge was born to Rosa Jane and Jefferson. A 3rd grandchild, Lee Gideon Smart, was born September 12 to Frances and Pinkney. On December 13, his 2nd child, Rosa Jane, died. She was 19 years old. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was organized.
In 1884 while Warren was 41 years old, a typhoid fever epidemic swept across the country. Warren’s 6th child, Charley Josephus, died January 24. He was 12 years old. A few days later, on January 30, his 1st child, Frances Augusta, died. She was 21 and had been married only 3 years. Her son Alvin Augustus was only 2, and Lee Gideon was a 4-month old infant. On July 26, his 10th child, James Owen, was born. On September 19, right after Warren’s 42nd birthday, he lost his 3rd child, William Pinkney. He was 17. In August, Edna Beard was born to Sallie and Johnny Beard. Grover Cleveland was elected the 22nd president that year.
In 1885, when Warren was 43 years old, William Burroughs invented the adding machine. Louis Pasteur developed a rabies vaccine. Gottlieb Daimler invented the internal combustion gasoline engine. Karl Benz invented a three-wheeled automobile.
In 1886, while Warren was yet 43 years old, his wife Martha died of the typhoid fever on February 27, a half-month short of her 44th birthday. She was buried at the Board Church Cemetery with their four children the fever had already claimed. Jonathan Solomon Beard died of pneumonia on January 26, leaving Sallie a young widow. Their daughter Johnnie was born two months later in March. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated. Geronimo surrendered.
In 1887, when Warren was yet 44 years old, his 4th child, George Columbus, married Anna Lilla Crockett on May 18.
In 1888, while he was still 45 years old, Warren married the 28-year old widow of Johnny Beard, Sarah Ann Elizabeth Sliger Beard, called “Sallie” on New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1, by Rev. Lewis Brock at his home. Warren and Sallie’s first child, Sebron Adam, was born December 4. Warren became grandfather for the 4th time when Augusta Lorena Wetzel was born July 6 to his son George and Anna Lilla. Benjamin Harrison was elected the 23rd president. George Eastman developed roll film for the Kodak camera. John Boyd Dunlop invented the pneumatic tire.
In 1889, when Warren was 47 years old, the Oklahoma territory was opened for settlement. North Dakota was admitted as the 39th state. South Dakota was admitted as the 40th state. Montana was admitted as the 41st state. Washington was admitted as the 42nd state.
In 1890, while he was still 47 years old, Warren’s 5th child, Martha Ann, married John Franklin Tate on January 16. Idaho was admitted as the 43rd state. Wyoming was admitted as the 44th state. Sitting Bull was killed. The first moving picture show was displayed.
In 1891, while he was still 48 years old, Warren and Sallie’s 2nd child, Angie Lee, was born February 27. Warren’s 5th grandchild, Arman Leard Wetzel, was born May 23 to his son George and Anna Lilla. An earthquake in Japan killed 10,000 people. The zipper was invented by W. L. Judson.
In 1892, while he was still 49 years old, Warren’s 6th grandchild, Charles Ethan Wetzel, was born July 28 to his son George and Anna Lilla. Grover Cleveland was elected the 24th president. The first Ford automobile was produced.
In 1893, while he was yet 50 years old, Warren and Sallie’s 3rd child, Thomas Ross, was born February 22. The longest recorded boxing match between Andy Brown and Jack Burk went 110 rounds in 7 hours and 4 minutes. The first professional football game was played in Pennsylvania.
In 1894, while he was yet 51 years old, Warren’s 6th grandchild, Sally Ann Victoreen Elizabeth Wetzel, was born April 5 to his son George and Anna Lilla. Alfred Dreyfus was arrested on treason charge, convicted and deported to Devil’s Island.
In 1895, while he was still 52 years old, Warren’s 7th grandchild, a little boy, was born April 7 to his daughter Martha Ann and John Tate. He died the same day. Warren and Sallie’s 4th child, Emma Ilena, was born in June. Marconi invented wireless telegraphy. Rontgen invented the X-ray. King Gillette invented the safety razor.
In 1896, when Warren was 54 years old, his 8th grandchild, Martha Minerva Wetzel, was born October 17 to his son George and Anna Lilla. Warren and Sallie’s 5th child, Lillie Floy, was born December 24. William McKinley was elected the 25th president. Utah was admitted as the 45th state.
In 1897, while he was still 54 years old, Warren’s 9th grandchild, Karl Franklin Tate, was born on May 31 to Martha Ann and John Tate. Warren’s 8th child, Ellen Piety, married Charles A. Batton on November 17. The Stanley brothers invented the Stanley Steamer.
In 1898, while he was still 55 years old, Warren and Sallie’s 6th child, Buddie, was born August 30. The Spanish-American War was fought over Cuba. The Spanish fleet was destroyed by the Americans at Manila.
In 1899, while he was still 56 years old, Warren’s 7th son, Martin Julius, married Eugenia Lee Thomas on February 14. Warren’s 11th grandchild, Ceril Earl Batton, was born November 26 to Ellen Piety and Charles Batton.
In 1900, while he was still 57 years old, Warren and Sallie’s 7th child, Mary Frances, was born February 4. Warren’s step-daughter, Martha Elvira Beard, married Benjamin Pinkney Waldrop on January 16. Warren’s 12th grandchild, Rose Ilena Wetzel, was born March 23 to Martin Julius and Eugenia. One day before his 58th birthday, Warren’s 10th grandchild, Truth Ermine Wetzel, was born September 7 to George and Anna Lilla. Warren’s 18th grandchild, Golda Claris, was born February 26 to James Owen and Dora Belle. Warren and Sallie’s 9th child, Wesley Armsterd, was born November 29. Warren’s 19th grandchild, Georgia Adena, was born December 17 to George and Anna Lilla. Warren’s 5th great-grandchild, Denver Lee, was born. Iced tea was invented. Work on the Panama Canal began.

In 1909, while he was still 66 years old, Warren and Sallie’s 8th child, Joseph, died of appendicitis March 24 at the age of 7. Warren’s 24th and 25th grandchildren, twins Joseph Weldon Wetzel and Earl Tillman Wetzel, were born September 30 to Warren Gordon and Susie Alice. The first Lincoln-head penny was minted.

In 1913, while he was still 70 years old, Warren’s 29th grandchild, Thomas Medford Wetzel, was born January 21 to George and Anna Lilla. Warren and Sallie’s 3rd child, Thomas Ross, married Emily Florilla Graham on October 4. A permanent Income Tax was established. Parcel Post service began.

Warren’s 34th grandchild, Flossie Raney, was born November 2 to Angie Lee and James Raney. President Wilson married Mrs. Edith Galt. The US Coast Guard was established by Congress.
In 1916, while he was still 73 years old, Warren’s 35th grandchild, Ozella Mae Wetzel, was born May 27 to Sebron and Naoma. Woodrow Wilson was re-elected president. General Francisco “Pancho” Villa invaded the United States with Mexican troops and killed 17 Americans at Columbus, New Mexico.
In 1917, while he was still 74 years old, Warren’s 36th grandchild, Oletha Flodell Batton, was born March 14 to Ellen Piety and Charles Batton. Warren and Sallie’s 7th child, Mary Frances, married Marion Francis Smith April 20. Warren and Sallie’s 4th child, Emma Ilena, died in July. Warren and his family moved from Comanche County to Ogburn in Wood County, where he bought 33 ½ acres of land. The United States entered World War I. In 1918, while he was still 75 years old, Warren’s 37th grandchild, Elmo Francis Smith, was born January 30 to Marie Frances and Francis Smith. Warren’s 11th great-grandchild, Jocelyn Wetzel, was born in July. Zona Marie Smith, Warren’s 12th great-grandchild, was born September 7. Warren’s 13th great-grandchild, James William Carter, was born November 12. Warren’s 38th grandchild, Evelyn Lillie Wetzel, was born December 9 to James Owen and Dora Belle. World War I ended.

In 1929, at 6:00 AM on Friday, April 26, when Warren was 86 years, 7 months and 18 days old, he died in his home in Ogburn, Texas. His body was transported back out to the Board Church Cemetery in Comanche County where he was laid to rest beside Martha and several of his children. On July 1, 1954, Sallie joined him there, where they wait for the resurrection morning.
